These natural cold remedies are nothing to sneeze at!

Natural cold remedies are fast effective relief from the misery of the cold or flu.

Acute rhinitis is it`s medical name and while usually this illness will run it`s course in 10 - 14 days it can rob one of energy, cause fever and chills and make you feel downright miserable.

If your symptoms are sore throat, sneezing and coughing along with congestion you most likely have the common cold. If in addition to those symptoms you also have a temperature above 101, extreme fatigue, diarrhea or vomiting then you most likely have the flu... a somewhat more serious condition.

While these conditions are usually not something to worry about, if the symptoms persist it could be a sign of something more serious such as bronchitis or sinus infection. If the latter is the case please seek medical attention.

  • At the first sign of a cold and as a preventative measure one of the great natural cold remedies is to get more zinc. Oysters have more zinc then anything else, however Alaskan king crab, lobster and chicken are good sources too. Almonds and cashews are also good sources of zinc. In vegetables and grains there is a component that reduces the absorption of zinc so you get less from these sources, however some are still good such as kidney beans, oatmeal and peas. You can also supplement with 30 milligrams of zinc daily, but if you do, you should also take 1 - 2 milligrams of copper as these two rob the body of each other.

  • Vitamin C is well known for it`s roll in fighting off, as well as helping the body to prevent, the catching any of the many cold viruses. Grapefruit is high in vitamin C and has less sugar then other citrus which makes it better suited for detoxifying the liver which will greatly aid in ridding the body of any virus. You should not only eat the fruit, but also the bitter white pulp inside the peel.

  • One of the many great natural cold remedies are the herbs Goldenseal and Echinacea. These two are often sold in stores combined together for a cold remedy, but we don`t recommend taking these combined. You need more Echinacea then Goldenseal and the latter is toxic if you take too much. Goldenseal has berberine which is a natural antibiotic. Take 1/2 a teaspoon tincture twice daily for up to 7 days.

    Echinacea stimulates the immune systems and if taken early enough can stave off the more serious symptoms of the common cold. Take 2 capsules three times daily until symptoms reduce. Echinacea will have the greatest effect if taken at the earliest sign of a cold.

  • If you can stand it one of the great natural cold remedies is to chew on a garlic clove. By chewing you not only get the antiviral and anti-bacterial components in garlic, but sensors in the throat will register this and activate the immune system which will further aid in getting rid of the cold virus.

  • As an herbal tea the following is one of the great natural cold remedies: 1/2 teaspoon of powdered ginger, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and a small pinch of clove powder. Place in a cup of hot water and let steep for 10 minutes and drink as a tea. Drink as often as you wish. Since ginger is an anti-inflammatory and a blood thinner similar to aspirin it is neither necessary or advisable to take these together. The tea is much better for you then the aspirin since it will not just mask symptoms, but aid the body in healing.

  • You can combine hydrotherapy with aromatherapy for soothing bath. Fill your bath with hot water and place several drops of Eucalyptus and using an aromatic diffuser place rosewood essential oil for a relaxing smell both of which are antiseptics.

  • The cold virus can rob the body of fluid so be sure to drink lots of water and twice a day add a small pinch of sea salt or mineral salt to replace needed minerals and electrolytes.

  • By relaxing and relieving stress you can boost your immune system to fight the cold virus. As one of the great natural cold remedies try some music therapy. I recommend Baroque or classical because especially the former, is based on mathematical rhythms that have been proven to cause the relaxation response, but you can use any music you truly find relaxing.

  • Yoga, tai chi, and daily meditation all have been shown to stimulate the immune system which can aid the body in preventing the cold virus. As one of the great natural cold remedies learn some of the beginner or basic yoga or tai chi exercises and meditate daily.

Remember that whether it is something that is a simple nuisance like the common cold or something much more serious it is an indication of an imbalance in the body, mind and/or spirit.

To achieve a state of health and one of the great natural cold remedies is to eat more fruit, vegetables and cold sea water fish, exercise, do daily meditation and prayer and find a spiritual practice of your choice to get actively involved in.
